Military bands to play Youngstown, Boardman

A pair of military bands will play concerts in Mahoning County next week.

The Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre, 201 S. Phelps St., Youngstown, will host the U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers Chorus 7 p.m. Tuesday, and the 122nd Army Band of the Ohio Army National Guard will perform at 7 p.m. the following night at Boardman Park's Maag Outdoor Arts Theatre, 375 Boardman-Poland Road.

The U.S. Army Field Band presents "America the Beautiful," a celebration of all there is to love about this nation.

The program also honors the veterans of every generation who answered the call to defend this country, and it recognizes the soldiers standing guard today in more than 140 countries around the world.

Since its formation in 1946, the "Musical Ambassadors of the Army" have appeared in all 50 states and more than 30 countries on four continents. Its members are selected through a highly competitive audition process.

The Soldiers Chorus, founded in 1957, is a 29-member mixed choral ensemble that serves as a vocal complement to the band.

"On Broadway" is the theme of the program the 122nd Army Band of the Ohio Army National Guard will play in Boardman, and the concert will feature songs ranging from "West Side Story" to "Rock of Ages."

The 122nd Army Band features musicians from throughout the state (as well as some nonresidents) and is charged with carrying out the mission of strengthening troop morale and building a positive connection between the public and the Ohio National Guard.

Admission for both concerts is free.
