JD’s Summer Songfest moves to Youngstown

JD’s Summer Songfest has a new location while hoping to keep the same laid-back vibe.

JD Eicher started the festival in 2015, and it was staged on the grounds of Quaker Steak & Lube in Austintown the first two years.

“(Youngstown event coordinator) Mike McGriffin contacted me about taking it downtown after the success of the past years,” Eicher said.

Eicher and his band have played at SOAP Gallery downtown before, so they moved the festival to the 100 block of South Champion Street, where the art gallery is located.

“We’re closing off the street, and we’re turning the parking lot next to SOAP Gallery into a stage area,” he said. “It should be really nice. Our focus for this event and what we’re excited about is it’s a family-friendly, acoustic-music festival with a laidback setting. It’s a casual, relaxed kind of vibe, not a sweaty, shoulder-to-shoulder music festival.”

The Canfield native has released four albums. Best-selling author Nicholas Sparks commissioned Eicher to write a song for his 2016 novel “Two By Two” and made a four-song EP of Eicher’s music available as a “soundtrack” to the book. Several of his songs have been played locally on The Summit (90.7 FM), and his music also has been used in a commercial for Olive Garden.

Joining him Saturday will be Will Hoge, Joy Ike and Youngstown’s Labra Brothers.

Hoge is a singer-songwriter whose music straddles the country and rock genres. The Eli Young Band had a chart-topping country hit with Hoge’s “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” and Lady Antebellum also has recorded his music.

Hoge just missed the country top 40 with his 2014 single “Strong,” which General Motors used in a Chevy Silverado ad. His latest album, “Anchors,” was released early this month.

“He has that acoustic singer-songwriter side to him that I love that’s in the spirit of this event,” Eicher said. “It’s an acoustic music festival that focuses on songs and songwriting.”

Ike is a Pittsburgh-based singer-songwriter who Eicher has toured with in the past. She performed last December at SOAP Gallery with Eicher for his annual Ugly Christmas Party concert.

Quaker Steak & Lube still is involved as a presenting sponsor and will have a food truck on site, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Students Motivated by the ARTS (SMARTS).

Starting at $3.23/week.
