ProbleMattic releases single with indie label

Special to the Tribune Chronicle Matthew Reeves of Warren performs under the name ProbleMattic.

Getting a label wasn’t “ProbleMattic” for Warren rapper Matthew Reeves.

C-Town Records, a hip-hop label affiliated with indie Cleveland Unlimited Records, approached him about releasing his music, and his first single, “Told Ya,” will be released Friday under his stage name, ProbleMattic.

George Beasley, who handles A&R for the label, said, “I happened to come across his music. He posted a video on a popular web site for hip-hop / rap music. Most of the stuff on there, 95 percent of the stuff is cookie-cutter type rap. When I heard Matt’s music, my ears perked up. ‘Man, this is different.’ I reached out and said, ‘I’d like to work with you.'”

Reeves, 27, said he was hesitant at first, but signed with C-Town after meeting with Beasley.

“I’ve been into music since I was in fifth grade,” he said. “I started getting serious two and a half years ago, and it’s starting to take me places.”

“Told Ya” was recorded in his basement studio and remixed and engineered by Christian “Markingtn” Adams.

“He fixed it and made it sound really crisp with mixing and mastering and all of that stuff,” Reeves said.

He and the label picked “Told Ya” as a first single because it had the most hit potential.

“I was impressed,” Beasley said. “Not only is the music good, but also what he has to say. He says it in a different way than we normally hear it expressed.”

It wasn’t surprising when Reeves listed Tupac and Eminem as his influences, but he also included rock act Counting Crows among those who inspire him.

“Tupac for the way he talked, Eminem with the way I sound, the way my flow goes together. And Counting Crows for the way, if you listen to their stuff, it’s kind of negative. In a way, it’s so negative, it was positive, if that makes sense.”

“Told Ya” is available to purchase digitally and can be heard on various streaming services. Beasley said he’s working to get the song to DJs who can spread the word about ProbleMattic.

“We’re basically using the single to introduce me to the world,” he said. “I have another song, ‘Dancing with the Devil,’ that will definitely go viral.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
