If you are a Trumbull County older adult, S.C.O.P.E. Senior Services assists with various programs and services. S.C.O.P.E. stands for "Senior Citizens Opportunity for Personal Endeavors" and is one of many agencies supported financially by the Trumbull County senior levy.
Senior levy agencies provide many individual support services to older adults over 60 years of age such as discounts on utilities, restaurants and stores. Free consultations are provided on Medicare or Medicaid and prescription information, as well as Social Security assistance.
Beginning in October and running through early December of every year is "Medicare Renewal" time. This program is one of the major support services we at SCOPE offer for free with our Program Manager Marge Haley. She travels to each of the SCOPE centers to meet with those asking for information or needing assistance with their plan renewals and prescription discounts. Those needing free help with their cellphones, laptops and computers can get assistance from SCOPE's IT Director Kevin Weber. Call 330-399-8846 to set up an appointment. We can also sit down with a senior and go online to set up accounts, make changes to governmental assistance programs and to communicate. Training sessions on scams are another vital and important part of SCOPE and other senior centers located throughout Trumbull County. Plus, SCOPE offers a 'Skype with Scope' program so older adults can stay in touch with their family and friends. This technology service received a national award as the best program in America by The National Council on Aging.
Through a network of attorneys and Community Legal Aid, free legal advice and notary services are offered. SCOPE also partners with the AARP Tax Aide Foundation and our public library system during tax season to provide free tax preparation services.
SCOPE, Help Network and Direction Home of Eastern Ohio offer older adults information and referral services. We receive thousands of calls a year from family members, as well as caregivers, wanting to know how local senior levy services can assist their elderly loved ones. These senior citizen needs provided by senior levy agencies include financial, housing, utilities, meals, transportation, homemaker, chore services, employment, adult protective services, ombudsman support and personal care.
SCOPE makes phone calls and even visits seniors' homes through its SOS (Save Our Seniors) project. We also deliver free groceries and offer isolation and loneliness support services to our area's elderly.
Local community senior citizen centers offer socialization activities, educational programs with many sessions in the health care field, fitness classes and recreational sports. SCOPE even offers one-day to three-day trips and tours throughout the year. SCOPE currently operates six senior citizen community centers located in Cortland, Howland, Hubbard, Newton Falls, Niles and Warren. There are also small community centers located in Farmington, Johnston, Kinsman and McDonald. We are currently meeting with representatives and older adults in Bristol, Brookfield and Champion townships on setting up new senior centers in their areas after the Trumbull County Commissioners approved partial funding for three new part-time community centers.
