Every year people flock to the annual Canfield Fair, the largest county fair in Ohio and the third largest in the United States, according to the fair's website. It is amazing, but we all knew that! Starting Wednesday through Labor Day, you have the opportunity to eat, go sightseeing, visit animals, see shows, buy things, ride rides, look at crafts, and, of course, eat.
Each year The Ohio State University Extension Office -- Mahoning County Master Gardeners has their booth set up, and this year is no different. The theme this year is "What are Your Garden Wishes?" Informative topics include "Putting More Magic in My Garden" with a wishing well and fairy garden included. "Better Plants for Better Gardens" makes suggestions to prepare garden sites after soil testing for the best garden produce results. "Attracting More Birds" offers ways to bring in those beautiful birds and enjoy the wildlife. Also, various gardening techniques will be provided along with information. Bulletins announcing upcoming workshops and presentations will be provided as handouts.
Along with the main theme, there will be posters, flyers and a clinic table with forms. If you have a question, problem or issue, you can fill out the form to be researched back at the clinic later on.
There will be plants! From flowers and native species to pollinators and vegetables, the Master Gardeners spend time every year to creatively design an attractive display that all can enjoy.
On hand will be master gardeners who are willing to talk about any garden related topic you like. Have an issue? A master gardener can explain the process of dealing with it. What about a dream? A master gardener can offer suggestions to realize that dream and make it reality. Need an idea? A master gardener can point you in the right direction. These skilled volunteers work hard to study, research and stay in touch with the up-to-date solutions for many of the problems you may face in the garden, your yard or in the world of plants.
Even after the fair is over, the Ohio State University Extension Office is open Monday through Friday, offering a free clinic on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon. We also offer soil tests at a modest charge before you begin any plantings, so amendments can be added for the best outcome. We focus on educational resources for you, the public, the year around, but we'd love to meet you at the fair!
