Ohio Department on Aging released a one-time grant opportunity to all counties across Ohio, upon request by each county, the Ohio Healthy Aaging Grant. The purpose is to foster improved quality of life for seniors so they can remain in their homes and connected to their communities, and to promote a healthy, independent, active lifestyle in alignment with the 2023-2026 State Plan on Aging. Several core priorities are mentioned in the State Plan on Aging with the focus on Healthy Living.
Recently the Senior Services Advisory Council, as appointed by Trumbull County commissioners, along with the senior levy administrator, recommended programs using this grant totaling $779,910 to the commissioners and began April 1.
In alignment with National Exercise Day on April 18, 2024, some of the programs involve keeping our seniors active and engaged as daily movement improves a longer term quality of life.
A new and interesting program funded with this grant, Rendever and I2NL, involves new technology and virtual reality creating meaningful experiences for older adults by connecting them to the world around them.
Statistics have proven that virtual reality programs have had positive affects on dementia and Alzheimer's conditions. Another activity receiving funding is for the annual Senior Showcase production which coincides well with the Ohio State Aging Plan to keep our older adults active and socially interacting. This production involves year round efforts needed to practice prior to the production in which Seniors are showcased publicly.
