CANFIELD -- If you love gardening, want to learn more and want to share gardening with the community, we have an opportunity for you. Join the Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program.
Mark your calendar for our next open house, which is 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 16 at the OSU Extension Office in Mahoning County, 490 S. Broad St.
You can come see what we're all about. We'll have stations explaining both our past and ongoing projects. Volunteers can explain the process of hands-on training and volunteering.
Having recently completed the course I am eager to earn my MGV status. Our graduating class has a mixture of professionals from various fields who have melded together to form a cohesive group of great friends.
Every volunteer opportunity allows you to learn how to grow healthy plants and / or accessorize with that perfect garden art. It's exciting to be in an environment of gardening enthusiasts who are able and willing to teach others their valuable knowledge. We also provide great refreshments and door prizes during our open house. Our Hospitality Department is top-notch!
Some of our activities that we assist or teach once we complete training include:
BOTO -- Bring one, take one. A fun way to have a plant exchange for sharing plants, learning about invasives, and trying to grow something new.
Holiday Containers and Centerpieces -- Learn how to use live greenery in festive designs for beauty, nature, and recycling.
Infused Vinegar with Garden Fresh Herbs -- Just one of our many classes which focus on herbs and edibles -- growing and using your own food.
Veggies and More Tour -- Let's talk veggie gardening! Meet with us on-site in gardens and urban farms to learn about growing and to share experiences.
Sensory Garden Classes -- Learning to enjoy gardening, share with others, and use gardening as mindfulness for dementia / Alzheimer's patients and others.
Invasives and More -- Sometimes, we must plant with caution. Learn about what plants spread quickly and which ones to avoid and control.
Attracting and Raising Monarch Butterflies -- From saving milkweed seeds to offering classes, we do our part to save this important species.
Plant and Pest Clinic -- Learn to do basic diagnostics to provide unbiased, research-based information to the public about their gardens, insect issues, and more.
