SANTA TO A SENIOR: Home Instead celebrates 20 years of hosting Be a Santa to a Senior, a gift-giving program for older adults who may be overlooked, isolated or alone during the holiday season.
This year, program coordinators hope to collect gifts for 750 older adults.
Ornaments featuring the name and desired gift of an older adult will be on display on Be a Santa to a Senior trees at at Austintown Home Instead, 5329 Mahoning Ave., Austintown; Austintown Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave., Austintown; Core Chiropractic Center, 8098 E. NUTRITION PROGRAM AVAILABLE: The Trumbull County Nutrition Program for the Elderly is provided by the Trumbull County Office of Elderly Affairs. Meals are delivered to county residents 60 and older who are homebound, unable to cook for themselves and not living with someone who can cook for them. Client donations are accepted. Call 330-675-2486. Reservations must be made by 2 p.m. two working days in advance.
The menu is:
TODAY: Grilled chicken salad with Italian dressing and chicken strips, salad mix with cheddar cheese and cucumbers, wheat bread, ranch dressing, pineapple, sherbet.
MONDAY: Pot roast with gravy, whipped potatoes, carrots, dinner roll, applesauce, mini muffin.
TUESDAY: Chicken Marsala, rice pilaf, seasoned Brussels sprouts, wheat bread, side salad with Italian dressing, cookie.
WEDNESDAY: Jumbo hot dog, tater tots, baked beans, hot dog bun, fresh orange, sherbet.
THURSDAY: Baked pollock with tartar sauce, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, dinner roll, Mandarin oranges, mini loaf.
DEC. 22: Sloppy joe, ranch seasoned potatoes, broccoli, sandwich bun, peaches, ice cream.
YOGA CLASS: Maureen Lauer Gatta is the instructor for a new yoga class 11 a.m. Saturdays at the Niles Senior Citizens Center, 14 E. State St. Participants should bring a thin yoga mat. The class provides for a relaxation time along with the standard moves of yoga. It's a free class offered through a sponsorship by the Mercy Health Foundation.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: SCOPE Senior Services is in need of volunteers during the daytime to help deliver groceries to homebound and disabled citizens.
Volunteers also can be assigned to the nonprofit community-based organizations that serve senior citizens in Trumbull County. Common assignments include administrative, food service and driving.

SCOPE MENTORSHIPS: SCOPE Senior Services is partnering with Big Brothers / Big Sisters to conduct a monthly mentorship program in which seniors will mentor a child on a regular basis. Through a grant from the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board, up to 25 senior citizens 60 and older can serve as mentors to a child ages 6 to 15.
Big Brothers / Big Sisters will put together a monthly activity for the mentors and children to meet and get to know each other. The normal activity program will occur at the Warren Senior Citizens Center at the old YWCA building. There also can be special events during the year.

AARP NEEDS TAX HELP: AARP Foundation TaxAide is looking for individuals to join a team of local volunteers to help provide free tax preparation for older, low-income taxpayers for the upcoming season in Trumbull County. AARP operates five sites in Trumbull County from February to April during the morning and early afternoon.
New volunteers will receive training and continued support throughout the process. Basic computer skills are a plus and tax preparation experience is not required. Training will take place in January of 2024.
