SCSEP OFFERS JOBS: The Vantage Aging Senior Community Service Employment Program offers paid job training and placement to low-income adults. The requirements are to be at least 55, unemployed and on Social Security or SS Disability. Participants can be assigned to nonprofit community-based or government agencies.

TAI JI QUAN IN NEWTON FALLS: Direction Home of Eastern Ohio conducts the Tai Ji Quan “Moving for Better Balance” free class with Shirley Svette from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Newton Falls City Hall, 612 W. Broad St.
Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing and bring a bottle of water.
Tai Ji Quan is an evidence-based 24-week fall prevention program that improves muscle strength, balance, flexibility and mobility. This class is structured to reduce the risk of falls for senior citizens.
Lunch provided by the Senior Kitchen is available at noon for a donation.

SCOPE GETS GRANT: SCOPE Senior Services received the HealthPath Foundation of Ohio’s 2023 Community Connectors grant of $8,000.
The grant will support SCOPE’s Traveling Pantry Food Truck project, which delivers free groceries to homebound seniors throughout Trumbull County. The HealthPath grant judges noted they were happy that the traveling pantry delivers in the food desert areas of Warren as well as to rural Trumbull County. Food deserts are areas where there is no close access to grocery stores, fresh produce or meats.
SCOPE is a program of Family and Community Services Inc. and operates the food truck with community partners the Warren Salvation Army, Vantage Aging and Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley and serves around 370 individuals monthly with free grocery deliveries.

ANNUAL SURVIVORSHIP PICNIC: The Mercy Health Foundation and Mercy Health Oncology are hosting the annual Survivorship Picnic from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 2 at Eastwood Field, 111 Eastwood Mall Blvd., Niles.
Tickets include entry to the picnic, admittance to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers game that evening and a $5 credit toward concessions. Survivor and guest will enjoy a meal, games, prizes and a tribute to survivors.

CORTLAND SENIOR CENTER: The Cortland Senior Citizens Center at Cortland Christian Church on Grove Street has some new activities.
Chef Geoff Fusco teaches a cooking class every first Thursday of the month at 11 a.m. The last few months he focused on making pasta, mozzarella and Tuscany soup.
Another new event is “Trivia Time,” a team trivia game with categories from the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s.

HUBBARD SENIORS: The Hubbard seniors are looking for more card players to join their group. The group meets 9:30 a.m. Thursdays at the community room at the rear of City Hall on West Liberty Street. Lunch is available at cost.
SSAG NEEDS VOLUNTEERS: The Senior Support Action Group, a nonprofit program that provides services to homebound seniors 55 and older in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties, is seeking both clients and volunteers.
The program provides monthly food box deliveries, phone pals and transportation to medical appointments.

SCOPE EVENTS: SCOPE Senior Services in Warren, 375 N. Park Ave., offers free knitting lessons 2 p.m. the first and third Mondays of the month.
Trivia games will be played at 2 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays.
FALLS CENTER OFFERS LUNCH: Newton Falls SCOPE, 612 W. Broad St., serves hot lunches to senior citizens. Call the center two days in advance at 330-306-9577. Meals are free but participants are asked to provide a donation.
The center is open for a wide variety of activities from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Masking and social distancing rules are followed.
NUTRITION SITES AVAILABLE: The Trumbull County Nutrition Program for the Elderly is provided by the Trumbull County Office of Elderly Affairs. Meals are delivered to county residents 60 and older who are homebound, unable to cook for themselves and not living with someone who can cook for them. Client donations are accepted. Call 330-675-2486. Reservations must be made by 2 p.m. two working days in advance.

WARREN SCOPE OFFERS PROGRAMS: The Warren SCOPE Center, 375 N. Park Ave., offers an indoor walking fitness area 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays. SCOPE provides an incentive of gift cards for seniors who walk 50 miles.
The Center offers a SilverSneakers FLEX fitness session 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays. The SilverSneakers FLEX stretch class is offered at noon on Tuesdays. Senior citizens who are Medicare-eligible can take classes for free. Non-SilverSneakers members pay $2 per class.

SCOPE’s information technology Kevin Weber offers diagnostic, maintenance and repair services for phones, laptops, tablets, iPads and computers; one-on-one training on the same; data migration, backups, system restores and resets; online services; virus and malware detection, prevention and recovery; and recovery from identity theft.

OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM: Direction Home of Eastern Ohio is looking for volunteers to join the Ombudsman Program to advocate for excellence for those living in long-term care facilities.
Ombudsman help ensure that residents of long-term care facilities receive quality care and treatment. Volunteers will make phone calls and virtual visits to residents.

RSVP is a national service program for individuals 55 and older who want to volunteer in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. These volunteers will also assist with community events.
VOLUNTEER PACKERS / DRIVERS NEEDED: Trumbull Mobile Meals delivers meals five days per week to Trumbull County residents who are homebound. The agency needs volunteer packers and volunteer drivers.
Volunteer cold packers help pack cold meals, 8:15 to 11 a.m., and volunteer hot packers pack meals from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. Drivers deliver between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Anyone who can spare an hour or two once a week or even just once a month is invited to help.

SILVERSNEAKERS ACTIVE: SilverSneakers Instructor Roselyn Ragozine leads SilverSneakers from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Newton Falls Senior Center. She leads a gentle yoga class from noon to 1 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Cortland Center. She offers a strength class at 9:30 a.m. and a yoga stretch class at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Warren Senior Center.
Those without a SilverSneakers card can still take classes for $2.
JCC MEAL PROGRAM: The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown and Jewish Family and Community Services offers fully prepared, frozen meals to anyone in Mahoning and Trumbull counties for home delivery or pick-up. The kosher-style meals are cooked by JCC staff and include an entree and two sides. The cost per meal is $6, with a five-meal minimum.
