Why Batman when you can have Ironman?

My Sentiments Exactly

By Patty Kimerer 3 min read

Everybody loves a hero -- someone who can swoop in and right a wrong, fix a catastrophe, save a damsel in distress and / or generally see to it that a bad guy gets his comeuppance.

We humans always root for the good guy -- or gal -- to come out on top.

Oh, and shame on those of you who prefer Lex Luthor to Superman, BT dubs! There's one in every group. Hmpf.

We simply want and need to believe that truth, justice and compassion win in the end -- that peace and love really do conquer all.

Which probably explains why, no matter how many hundreds or thousands of superheroes flood television airwaves, dominate film reels, or spill into the pages of comic books (etc.), there's always a new one looming out there. Always.

Typically, he or she has some inventive new type of power and is standing at the ready, only too willing to help the mortals whom they will eventually need to steer out of harm's way, naturally.

My personal favorite superhero is Ironman. Anyone who knows me is aware of my unhealthy obsession with Ironman.

Just curious but, are there any HEALTHY obsessions? Either way…

It doesn't hurt that, most recently, the infamous genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist who routinely struts about as he's saving mankind, was portrayed by my all-time Hollywood crush, Robert Downey Jr.

Um, yes, please and thanks! #IAdoreRDJ2

Swoon.

Then again, I clearly recall wanting to be Wonder Woman as a child. So perhaps she and Ironman are in a dead heat for my top pick.

Not only was Wonder Woman beautiful, kind and a bonafide superheroine in every sense of the word, but she also was one of the original founders of the Justice League, a'ight? Not to mention she had the absolute coolest suit AND her own plane, which was invisible so the bad guys wouldn't see her coming, yo.

She kicked some serious bad guy behind what with those magical, shiny bracelets and that truth-eliciting golden lasso. Plus, her boots were super cool. Mind you, I am referring to the Lynda Carter, the TV version of WW, not the recent movie remakes / updates, which I refuse to watch.

No offense to the breathtaking Gal Gadot, who is THIS generation's film version of Diana Prince, aka, Princess Diana of Themyscira. But to me, WW will always be Lynda Carter. #IAmOld

The point is, everyone's got their preferred superhero, am I right? But here's the rub: Why does Batman have 18 bazillion incarnations, iterations and versions?

Adam West was the original Bruce Wayne / Batman for me, natch. He and his understudy, Robin (Burt Ward), busted the chops of many a villain (mostly the Penguin and the Riddler).

And while I am totally sympathetic to Bruce's scarring situation of witnessing his parents being gunned down (which was the catalyst for his dedication to fighting crime), I have to admit, I don't entirely get it. Why is Batman the most replicated of all the superheroes? The sheer volume of recreations escapes me.

Let's face it, he IS a vigilante, for all intents and purposes.

Besides, everyone knows Ironman is the greatest superhero of all time, capisce?
