In spite of great successes, unity eludes Trumbull Republicans

Despite a lack of unity, Republicans in Trumbull County are riding a historic wave of success. Now the party is looking for stability and that may prove to be a bigger challenge than beating Democrats. The disharmony was evident during Tuesday’s central committee meeting to choose its ...

Trumbull GOP seeks leader again

Remarkably, the Trumbull Republican Party – which can boast of gaining nearly complete control over the executive branch of county government and is making inroads in the judicial branch – is looking for a new chair for the third time in 30 months. If you count two interim chairs, the person selected at a Dec. 3 meeting will be the fifth person to serve the four-year term initially won June 10, 2022, by Kenneth Kline. There’s still 18 months left before that term expires. This is during a historic renaissance for the Republican Party in Trumbull, which has been one of the ...

Valley turns deeper red

Mahoning County Republican Party Chairman Tom McCabe said that years ago he and Mark Munroe, a former party chairman, would routinely get calls from GOP leaders asking if it was possible for a statewide candidate to possibly do better than 35% in the county. “If we got 36% for a candidate, we would celebrate because we did better than expected,” McCabe said. “It’s hard to envision what is happening now.” What happened is Republicans have turned Mahoning and Trumbull, two of the most reliable Democratic counties in Ohio since 1936 – when the New Deal rescued the country ...

Bernie Moreno, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, said, “If I win Mahoning County, the race is over, over. It’s over.” He’s right. Mahoning and Trumbull counties were two Democratic strongholds for 80 years until Republican Donald Trump won the presidency in 2016. Trump narrowly lost the 2016 general election in Mahoning County to Democrat Hillary Clinton and beat her in Trumbull, which had typically supported Democrats but not as strongly as Mahoning. In 2020, Trump beat Democrat Joe Biden in both counties. Also, both counties have elected Republicans since 2018 ...

Ballot delays trigger anger

For the second straight presidential election year, a vendor hired to print and mail absentee ballots to Mahoning Valley voters failed to do its job. This time it was ElectionIQ LLC, an Akron company, hired by the Mahoning County Board of Elections to print and mail ballots that got fired after failing to complete the job in a timely manner. It means that some ballots requested by voters last month won’t arrive in their mailboxes until today. They should have been there about two weeks ago. That will result in some unable to vote because they are out of town with others – ...
