How many times must our community and state get kicked in the teeth by corporate greed before we replace the brazen dictators rather than our broken dentures? The answer may still be blowing in the wind, but it certainly is not infinite.
First, there is the colossal bribery scheme, the largest in Ohio history, hatched by FirstEnergy to implement a $1.3 billion bailout for its nuclear plants. Then comes the abrupt and corrupt closure of GM Lordstown, the area's economic engine for decades, followed by a series of false promises and real failures culminating in its mismanaged successor filing for bankruptcy in June. In February, the health and safety of a whole community, greater East Palestine, was explosively placed in dire jeopardy by a catastrophic toxic train derailment driven, I believe, by greed and negligence of Norfolk Southern. The damage caused by these corporate abuses remains unabated.
Perhaps this is a good time to remind ourselves of the wise words contained in the American Declaration of Independence stating "all experience hath shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."
However, what happens when the evils of corporate America have become insufferable? Stay tuned.
