HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- Northern Kentucky outscored Youngstown State, 13-5, over the last 3:37 en route to a 76-69 win over the Penguins Thursday night at BB&T Arena, ending YSU's six-game winning streak.
Sophomore Naz Bohannon scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while dishing out four assists for the Penguins (12-17, 8-8 Horizon League). Sophomore Garrett Covington scored 13 points while junior Devin Morgan added 10 points.
Drew McDonald led Northern Kentucky (21-7, 11-4) with 27 points and 12 rebounds and went 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. YSU took 14 free throws as a team.
The Penguins trailed by seven, 51-44, with 11:53 left, before a 9-2 run tied the game at 53 with 9:19 remaining. The game was tied again at 56-56, then a basket by Bohannon, a free throw by Covington and a jumper by Jelani Simmons gave the Penguins a 62-60 lead -- their first since early in the first half. After the Norse took a 63-62 lead, Covington made a pair of free throws at the 3:37 mark as the Penguins regained a 64-63 edge.
Northern Kentucky scored the next nine points to take a 72-64 lead with just 40 seconds remaining. Bohannon's three-point play got the Penguins within five, 74-69, with 13 seconds left.
Darius Quisenberry missed much of the game after injuring an ankle in the first half.
The Penguins play Saturday at Wright State.
