Penguins women can’t overcome American in overtime

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Youngstown State’s rally fell just short as the women’s basketball team dropped its third straight game Saturday against American.

The Penguins (2-5) rallied from nine points down in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but fell in the extra session, 78-72.

Lordstown native Sarah Cash had a game-high 25 points and six rebounds, while Nikki Arbanas added 19 points — including six 3-pointers. Cash was 11 of 12 from the free-throw line and split a pair with 42.9 seconds left to tie the game at 64.

Kaitlyn Lewis scored 16 points to lead American and hit a big 3-pointer in overtime to put the Eagles up 72-66.

YSU trailed by eight with 8 minutes remaining, but held American scoreless for about 5 minutes to tie the game at 57 on a Cash basket. Arbanas and Chelsea Olson hit 3 cut the American lead to 64-64 with 59 seconds remaining.

Cash and American’s Emily Kinneston had potential game-winning shots, but both went awry.

YSU plays its third straight road game on Tuesday at Akron, starting at 7 p.m.
