2 min read

CHICAGO -- Youngstown State women's basketball coach John Barnes said his team making 3-pointers is vital to their success.

Saturday, the Penguins did just that as they shot almost 50 percent in a convincing 73-49 victory over Loyola Chicago.

YSU (1-2), which had losses against Pittsburgh and Kent State to start the season, went 12 of 26 from 3 and 28 of 58 from the floor.

The Penguins only committed eight turnovers and led 26-7 after one period.

Alison Smolinski led YSU with 15 points, while Lordstown native Sarah Cash had 14 points in 16 minutes of play. Freshman Chelsea Olson added 14 off the bench. Olson and Smolinski accounted for six of the team's 12 3-pointers.

YSU goes for two straight as it hosts Ohio Valley Monday at 7 p.m.

CANISIUS 104, YSU MEN 84: BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Braun Hartfield's career-high 33 points and five 3-pointers weren't enough to lift the Penguins men's basketball team past Canisius. Both are 1-2.

The Golden Griffins shot 62.3 percent from the floor and made 13 3-pointers as YSU gave up more than 100 points for the second time this season.

YSU cut the lead to 75-69 with 7:14 left.

Isaiah Reese (23 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists), Spencer Foley (25 points), Malik Johnson (22 points) and Jeremiah Crumpton (21 points) led Canisius.

Noe Anabir and Cameron Morse each had 10 points for YSU, which hosts Westminster, the second NCAA Division III team the Penguins have played this season. Tipoff of Tuesday's game is at 7 p.m., and is part of the Sanford Pentagon Showcase. YSU then travels to Sioux Falls, S.D., and plays Northern Colorado (Friday), Southern Mississippi (Saturday) and South Dakota (Nov. 26).
