YOUNGSTOWN -- Cameron Morse takes nothing for granted, even when he's been bestowed an award.
On Wednesday, the Youngstown State junior guard was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 12 first team with other Horizon League players like Valparaiso's Alec Peters and Oakland's Jalen Hayes. District 12 comprises players from the Horizon and Summit Leagues.
"People overlook our league, but our league has a lot of good players in there, great competition," Morse said. "Anybody can step up and be a really top player. Me, J Hayes and Alec Peters, standing out in the league, that just sets a path for the rest of the players."
Morse is the second YSU player in the last four years to receive this distinction. Kendrick Perry was a first teamer in the 2013-14 season.
Morse led the Horizon League in scoring with 23.2 points in league games, while being second to Peters in scoring overall with a 22.9 average.
The Flint, Mich., native set YSU's Division I single-season scoring record with 711 points and is the third player in school history to score at least 700 in a season.
Morse, who scored in double figures in 30 of 31 games, also had four games with 40 or more points, another Penguin record.
His 260 field goals, 76 3-pointers and 22.9 average puts him in the top 10 as far as YSU single-season leaders.
Horizon League standouts Martez Walker (Oakland) and Mark Alstork (Wright State) made the District 12 second team.
Morse, a first-team Horizon League player, sees this award as a blessing.
"It lets me know all the work I put in throughout the year is starting to pay off," he said.
"Me being on the first team with the best players in the country and the region, that's an honor. I give all the glory to God."
