YOUNGSTOWN -- Freshman Mary Dunn has seen more playing time than most freshman.
She filled in for YSU junior and Lordstown native Sarah Cash, who has been out most of the season with a knee injury.
The 6-foot-3 Washington, Pa., native was up for the opportunity as she was named Horizon League Freshman of the Year Tuesday.
"Definitely having Sarah out, it was a scare for us," YSU sophomore guard Melinda Trimmer said. "Mary has come in and taken off offensively and able to get good looks. She's been a good finisher. She has a really positive attitude too, wanting to learn. She's been nothing but helpful for us."
Dunn is the first YSU player to earn this honor since Jen Perugini won this in the 2001-02 season. YSU has had a post player receive postseason league honor for eight straight years and nine of the last 10.
Dun led all Horizon League freshman in scoring and field-goal percentage. She received freshman of the week honors four times.
Dunn averaged 11.4 points and four rebounds while shooting 51.4 percent from the field during the regular season. She scored in double figures 17 times, including nine straight games from Dec. 6 through Jan. 14. Dunn enters the league tournament having scored at least 10 points in three of her last four games.
"She's done that much, especially with the players we have out," YSU coach John Barnes said. "She was our leading scorer until she hurt her ankle and still done a great job for us all year."
YSU (9-20) plays Valparaiso (9-20) in the first round of the league tournament Friday at 2:30 p.m.
