YSU (4-10, 0-3 Horizon League) outscored the Norse (5-11, 1-3) by 14 points in the final quarter to force the extra session.
Mary Dunn paced the Penguins with 18 points, while India Benjamin added 17 points and nine assists.
Freshman Morgan Brunner had a career-high 16 points, while Jenna Hirsch put in 12.
YSU trailed 58-44 to start the fourth and Northern Kentucky amassed a 60-44 advantage before the Penguins went on their run.
Benjamin's free throw tied the game at 71 with three seconds remaining in regulation.
The Norse led by double figures most of the game, but YSU kept chipping away with Benjamin's 3-pointer with 5:58 remaining closing the gap to 64-58.
Rebecca Lyttle led Northern Kentucky with a career-high 23 points, while, Kasey Uetrecht had 22 points and career-best 16 rebounds. Mikayla Terry put in 16 points, while former YSU guard Shar'Rae Davis had 11.
Thursday, YSU opens a three-game homestand as it hosts UIC. Tipoff is at 5:15 p.m.
