HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- Junior Cameron Morse scored the 1,000th point of his career after scoring 13 points but the Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped an 83-70 decision to Northern Kentucky on Thursday evening at BB&T Arena.
The Penguins fall to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in the Horizon League while the Norse improve to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Junior Francisco Santiago nearly missed his third straight double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds and sophomore Devin Haygood tied a career high with 11 points. Senior Brett Frantz also reached double figures with 10 points.
Northern Kentucky was led by Mason Faulkner's 24 points and Drew McDonald's 15 points.
The Penguins visit Wright State, Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Nutter Center. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m.
WRIGHT STATE DEFEATS YSU WOMEN: FAIRBORN - The Youngstown State women's basketball had a cold spell come at the wrong time and fell 71-58 at Wright State on Thursday evening. The Penguins cut a 10-point deficit down to two, 55-53, with just over seven minutes remaining in the game.
Indiya Benjamin had a runner rim out on their next possession that would have tied the game, and YSU (4-9, 0-2) went on to miss eight consecutive field-goal attempts. Benjamin finished with a team-high 16 points, but she also committed eight turnovers.
Mary Dunn, meanwhile, posted 13 points while foul trouble limited her to 19 minutes of action, and Morgan Brunner came off the bench to record career highs of 10 points and nine rebounds.
Both of Wright State's (10-5, 2-1) starting posts had double-doubles as Symone Simmons had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Lexi Smith registered 14 points and 16 rebounds.
YSU concludes its three-game Horizon League road swing at Northern Kentucky on Saturday at 7 p.m.
