YOUNGSTOWN -- Junior Francisco Santiago's double-double helped lift the Youngstown State men's basketball team past Oberlin, 87-72, on Saturday night at the Beeghly Center.
Santiago had 20 points and 10 rebounds and was one of five Penguin players to reach double figures in the game.
Senior Matt Donlan scored 16 points and made three 3-pointers, while junior Rahim Williams scored 14 points. Sophomores Latin Davis and Devin Haygood each had 10 points.
The Penguins led by just two points, 43-41, at the intermission, thanks, in part, to 11 3-pointers by Oberlin. However, the Penguins pushed its lead to 17 points after a 21-6 run to open the second half.
Donlan hit a pair of 3s, plus, jumpers by Santiago and Donlan, a 3-pointer by Williams and then another jumper by Santiago gave the Penguins a 64-47 lead with 11:39 left.
Youngstown State pushed its lead to as many as 21 points, 75-54, with 7:09 to go. The Yeomen, consequently, would not get any closer than 13 points the rest of the way. In the first half, the Penguins and Yeoman fought a tightly-contested game before the Penguins, who never trailed, extended its lead to 10 points, 38-28, with 3:37 left.
Oberlin, though, made three of its 11 first-half three's in the final three minutes of the half, cutting the Penguins lead down to two. The Penguins shot 50.8 percent from the field and had 23 assists on 33 made field goals.
Leading Oberlin was Nathan Cohen, who had 12 points, while Eli Silverman-Lloyd and Scott Miller had 11 apiece. For the game, the Yeomen made 16 3-pointers but shot just 38.6 percent from the field and 35.6 percent from 3-point range.
YSU, which has won four of its last five games, improves to 5-4 overall, while the Yeomen fall to 1-5. Youngstown State visits Michigan State at 7 p.m., Tuesday at the Breslin Center. The game will be nationally broadcast on ESPNU.
