Striders send 11 to USATV Region 5 meet

Eleven members of the Warren Striders Track Club have qualified for the USATV Region 5 Junior Olympic Championships to be held July 5-8 at Olivet (Mich.) University.

The top five finishers in each event at the regional will advance to the USATV National Junior Olympics Championships scheduled July 23-29 at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.

Austin Blackwell and Sarah Schneider each won three events in the Lake Erie Association Meet held Saturday at Bedford. Blackwell, competing in the boys 9-10 age group, won the long jump, 100 and 200. Schneider won the long jump, 100 hurdles and 200 dash in the girls 13-14 age group.

The Striders collected 20 medals (seven gold, 10 silver and three bronze) at the regional qualifying meet in Bedford. The top six in each event advanced to the regional.

In addition to Blackwell and Schneider, Nae’Jon Moore also won an event, the 200, in the girls 9-10 group. She also placed second in the 100.

Other Striders who posted second-place finishes included Ben Peterson, 13-14 boys, 200 and 400; Jonna Moore, 7-8 girls, 100 and 200; Aundrea Cooper, 11-12 girls, 100 and 200; Norah Schneider, 9-10 girls, long jump; Sarah Schneider, 13-14 girls 400; and Anaysia Moore, 13-14 girls, 100.

Third-place Striders were K’Saun Brown, 7-8 boys, 100 and 200; and Jocelyn Hill, 9-10 girls, 200. Peterson also placed fourth in the 13-14 boys 100, and Hill was fourth in the 9-10 girls 100.

Norah Schneider added a fifth-place in the 9-10 girls 100 and Alijah Hudson was sixth in the 15-16 boys 400.

The Striders are coached by Jack Thornton Jr. and assisted by James Guy, Jackie Hudson, Heather Schneider and Heather Peterson.

In a mid-June meet at East Liverpool, Ben Peterson won the 100, 200 and 400 in the 13-14 boyd division. Four Striders were double event winners: K’Sean Brown in the 7-8 boys 100 and 200; Jonna Moore, 7-8 girls, 100 and 200; Nae’Jon Moore, 9-10 girls, 100 and 200; and Sarah Schneider, 13-14 girls 100 hurdles and 400.

In addition, Anaysia Moore, in the 13-14 girls group, won the 100 and finished second in the 200 and 400, while Sarah Schneider added a second in the long jump and a third in the 200.

Alijah Hudson was second in the 15-16 boys 400; Violet Moore was second in the 9-10 girls 100 and third in the 200; Makiya Simpson was second in the 11-12 girls 200; Destini Townsend was third in the same race; and Austin Blackwell was third in the 9-10 boys long jump, 100 and 200.
