CORTLAND -- Saying she looks forward to becoming part of the Lakeview family, Velina Jo Taylor, superintendent of Brookfield Schools, was hired Monday as the new superintendent of the Lakeview School District.
The Lakeview Board of Education approved a three-year contract for Taylor, effective Aug. 1, at a salary of $111,000 per year.
Taylor, who has been a teacher, principal and superintendent in Brookfield for most of her career, will replace Robert Wilson, who is retiring as Lakeview's superintendent in July.
"I am humbled and honored and very excited to become part of the Lakeview School District family. I look forward to working with all of you. My door will always be open," said Taylor, who becomes the district's fifth superintendent.
Taylor said the Brookfield Board of Education officially will accept her resignation March 20.
Taylor has served Brookfield as superintendent (three years), high school principal (five years) and teacher (16 years). She also worked three years as Canfield Middle School principal and worked six years with the Mahoning County Educational Service Center.
Board of Education President Troy Adair said Taylor was selected from 15 applicants. He said Taylor was selected based on her academic and background experience, and her personality.
Board member Donna Zuga said she was impressed with Taylor's communication skills and her record of student achievement in the districts she served.
Wilson, superintendent since 2005, started in Lakeview in 1991-92 as a teacher and also served as high school principal. He said he will work with Taylor to familiarize her with the responsibilities of the position.
