YOUNGSTOWN -- The Diocese of Youngstown on Thursday released an updated list of 31 Catholic priests who were credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor in its 75-year history.
A preliminary list released Tuesday did not contain information on where the priests served. Diocesan chancellor Msgr. John Zuraw said members of the media had requested more information from Bishop George Murry after Tuesday's press conference.
"We released the updated list to be more complete of where they have served," said Zuraw, who also noted the list contains the names of the parishes and schools within the six counties the Youngstown Diocese serves. Most of the names on the list are now deceased.
Murry said the list is avalable on the Youngstown Diocese website and will be supplemented based on credible allegations in the future. Murry encouraged any other victims to come forward and speak with the diocese's victim assistance coordinator, retired Youngstown police sergeant Delphine Baldwin-Casey, at 330-718-1388.
Murry said the 31 priests with credible accusations against them have been removed from their ministries. He said more than 1,000 men have been priests and other religious leaders for the diocese since it was founded in 1943. He said 76 victims' allegations were investigated over the years and most were found to be true.
The bishop said whenever there is an allegation of sexual abuse involving clergy or a parish employee, it is investigated and directed to civil authorities, such as children services. The Diocese of Youngstown works with a private investigation firm, which consists of former FBI agents.
A review board includes a psychologist, representatives of the Trumbull and Mahoning County Children Services Board, attorneys, medical doctors, the dean of the college of health and human services at Youngstown State University, a Lutheran pastor, a Catholic priest and a parent.
The bishop said previously all the parishes and schools where the priests in question were stationed were notified in writing and were invited to contact the diocese if they knew of someone who had been abused or were abused themselves.
The 31 priests and their former assignments as provided by the Youngstown Diocese include:
