WARREN — Gabriel Opat said he was surfing the channels early Tuesday morning when he heard the noise and knew what was about to happen — an out-of-control car barreling toward his home on Ohio Avenue NW was about to strike.
“I got off the couch, walked toward the window. I thought it was going to come through my window … it looked like car parts and stuff flying all over the place,” said Opat, 40.
His daughter was asleep on the couch near the corner of the house where the Chrysler 300 struck.
“I was walking toward my daughter to see if I needed to do something. I thought I would have to jump on her, grab her, yank her out of the way,” said Opat, who added the 8-year-old slept through the whole ordeal.
According to Warren police, the Chrysler was traveling west on Summit Street NW just after 2:30 a.m. about 80 mph and could not make the bend where Summit Street NW turns into Ohio Avenue NW. The car went through a guardrail, struck the front porch at 725 Ohio Ave. NW and then hit Opat’s home at 715 Ohio Ave. NW.
The collision cracked the cinder block basement wall of the home. A 911 call sheet states part of the car was in the basement of the home. Inside the basement, Opat said, a table and gas line were damaged.
“I go out to the car to take a look and the guy wasn’t even in the driver’s seat, he was on the passenger side of the car, bloodied up a bit,” Opat said.
“Debris flew probably 100 feet away from the accident. It threw stuff all the way into the backyard,” he said.
Charged in connection to the crash was Dustin W. Campana, 24, who is due to make his first appearance today in Warren Municipal Court on driving under license suspension, reckless operation of a vehicle and failure to control charges, court records show.
Campana, 1104 Harrison St. NE, Warren, was taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital for treatment, the 911 report states.
