VIENNA -- Former Bloomfield-Mespo schools superintendent Russell T. McQuaide will be heading southeast this upcoming school year as the new superintendent for the Mathews Local School District.
McQuaide, of Howland, who is currently a principal at Bloomfield Elementary, was granted a three-year contract at $90,000 annually as Mathews' next superintendent.
The Mathews Board of Education at a special meeting Friday approved the contract, effective Aug. 1. The board also approved a per diem employment of $346 per day for the transition period in July when McQuaide will work with current Superintendent Lew Lowery, who is retiring Aug. 1.
Board President Tarin Brown said McQuaide is being paid the same salary Lowery made.
"This is a really nice school district," McQuaide said. "I am so excited and proud to be serving here and am grateful to the board and this community for this opportunity. It is my promise to do my best to make a difference every day. We want to show this nice school district off to this community."
McQuaide received both his bachelor's in music education and master's in administration from Youngstown State University. He worked as a teacher for Jackson City Schools in southern Ohio for four years, as a teacher 10 years at Champion schools and then for 10 years with the Bloomfield-Mespo schools, as a principal / superintendent dual role for five years and elementary principal for five years.
Brown said the board was impressed with McQuaide's experience and background as an administrator.
"He came to the interview super prepared. He really impressed us and seemed like a good fit for our district and community," Brown said.
McQuaide was selected from 23 applicants who sought the position.
Lowery served the Mathews district since 2011, when he replaced Lee Seiple. He had previously served as an educator and principal for Mineral Ridge High School. Lowery has been in education for more than 40 years.
