Crews fight tanker truck fire in Weathersfield

WEATHERSFIELD — Township fire crews responded Tuesday afternoon to a tanker truck that was in flames near some houses in the 2900 block of West Liberty Street.

According to a Trumbull County 911 report, the driver was out and tried to put out the blaze, but the rear wheels on the trailer began to ignite. The tanker was empty and the front of the rig was disconnected from the trailer, the 911 report states.

Crews were concerned because the flames reached close to electrical lines the vehicle was parked under. Weathersfield fire Chief Randall Pugh said the brakes locked up on the truck, causing a tire to catch fire.

The tanker was empty and flushed properly, Pugh said, and crews were able to extinguish the fire in about a half hour.

No one was injured, Pugh said, and homes did not need to be evacuated.
