WHAT: Board of Education meeting Monday

The board:
• Hired Valerie Infante as treasurer's assistant at $38,792 for eight hours per day for 260 days effective Dec. 1. Infante is being hired to fill the position created by the reassignment of Julie Sloan to assistant treasurer/ payroll effective Dec. 1;
• Approved a three-year planned service contract for the district's air conditioning with Johnson Controls for the new PK-8 building at $12,108 the first year, $11,380 the second year and $13,888 the third year;
• Scheduled board dialogue with high school students 11:30 a.m. Oct. 30 at high school media center;
• Recognized the girls golf team for winning the AAC White Tier Championship in September held at Trumbull Country Club. Coach is math teacher Gary Israel. This is the first time a golf team from Champion has received the honor;
• Heard from high school Principal John Grabowski of plans to make a sound-proof room at the school for the symphonic band to play and record music;
• Reported the Champion Schools Finance Committee met recently to discuss energy and resource efficiency measures for the new school, including lighting, air conditioning, plumbing, windows and roofing. Brett Hendricks, president with BSHM Architects, reported 20 percent of the building materials for the new school are for recycled products. To also save money, energy-efficient lights in the building will be controlled by occupancy sensors and dual switching and windows will be thermally broken insulated glazed;
• Heard from Bill Schurman of Hammond Construction the new school will be under roof by mid-December for interior work during winter months. Bids will be sought for abatement and demolition of the elementary and middle schools, asphalt paving and playground equipment at new site.
