Home in Johnston catches fire, 911 says
JOHNSTON -- Fire departments from several communities battled a blaze Sunday afternoon at a home in the 7400 block of Stoddard Hayes Road.
According to a report from the Trumbull County 911, crews from Johnston, Kinsman, Gustavus, Greene, Burghill and Cortland responded about 5:20 p.m. to the fire that damaged the home.
No injuries were reported, but a 911 supervisor said a Red Cross unit was called in to help the family.
The cause of the blaze will be investigated by the Trumbull County fire inspector, the report states.
Twenty Under 20 tickets available
WARREN -- Tickets are available for the dinner to honor the 2017 Class of Twenty Under 20.
The program, now in its fifth year, recognizes 20 high-achieving local individuals younger than 20 for their leadership skills through volunteerism, extracurricular activities and academic achievements.
The dinner is Dec. 5 at DiVieste Banquet Hall. Tickets are $20 and are available in the lobby of the Tribune Chronicle, 240 Franklin St. SE, Warren, or by calling Sue Shafer, community events coordinator for the newspaper, at 330-841-1696. The lobby is open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
The program is co-sponsored by the Tribune Chronicle, Akron Children's Hospital Mahoning Valley and Kent State University at Trumbull.
Warren mill's blast furnace is razed
WARREN -- The area's last remaining steel mill blast furnace was razed Sunday.
Workers began dismantling the blast furnace, located on the property of the former RG Steel mill, in July 2016. The remaining structure was toppled Sunday, according to Tribune Chronicle news partner WKBN Channel 27.
The blast furnace first opened in 1922, by a company then known as Trumbull Cliffs Iron Co.
The mill halted production in 2012, and it was purchased out of bankruptcy by BDM Warren Steel Holdings.
