WHAT: Board of Education meeting Wednesday
PRESENT: Peter Cardiero, Mark Zuppo, Diane Alejars, Cheryl Asente and Joseph Melfi
The board:
• Is still reviewing which architectural firm to construct the proposed performing arts center auditorium on the west side of the Girard High School property. Superintendent David Cappuzzello said a decision will be made for the Oct. 25 meeting. Plans are to construct the auditorium for graduation ceremonies, school plays, musical performances and other events. The current cafetorium stage area provides limited space for the public and student body;
• Presented a high school diploma to the family of the late Joseph Siciliano, a U.S.Marine veteran who served in the Vietnam War;
• Approved Robin Estes, Vicki Billey and Christopher Murphy as academic intervention specialists at $78 per hour and Kyle O'Hare as a student event aide;
• Entered into an agreement with the McDonald school district to provide a place for six to eight of McDonald's buses to be stored in Girard and receive work from the Girard bus mechanic at $2,400 per year;
• Entered into agreements with United Way and Meridian Healthcare to provide various services for students.

Lordstown
WHAT: Board of Education meeting Monday
PRESENT: William Catlin, Tracie Allen, Niki Reid and Ron Tyndall

The board:
• Discussed the third Student Activity Rush where student activity groups at the high school set up tables with information and sign up sheets to recruit new members in groups such as the Political History Club, Power of the Pen, Key Club and mock trial;
• Approved paying $2,375 for electrical work required by the Lordstown Apple Cider Festival on the grounds for installation of a 100-amp service;
• Approved James Burns as a substitute bus driver;
• Heard from Superintendent Terry Armstrong that Lordstown schools appreciates the opportunity to continue working with the village and Clean Energy Future, which will help support a future of innovation and engagement at Lordstown Local Schools;
• Discussed Lordstown's improvement in ACT scores according to the five-year trend report as part of the College Readiness Letter released this week by ACT. Armstrong said the district exceeded the state average in English, math, reading and science. He said improved ACT scores can result in increased opportunities for scholarships and for college admission. The district's composite score went from 20 in 2013 to 23.3 in 2017. Armstrong said a focus on college and career readiness in the classroom and the creation of an ACT prep course offered in nine-week sessions to students have contributed to improving the ACT results.

WHAT: City Council meeting Wednesday
PRESENT: Larry Larson, Alford Novak, John Brown Jr., Mark Forte, Cheryl Saffold, Eugene Mach, Eddie Colbert, Daniel Sferra, Helen Rucker and Council President Jim Graham.
ABSENT: Danielle Polivka
Council:
• Approved entering into an agreement with the Ohio Department of Transportation for the reconstrunction and resurfacing of East Market Street from Main Street to state Route 82;
• Approved entering into an agreement with ODOT for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Reserve Avenue bridges;
• Approved entering into an agreement with ODOT for the reconstruction and resurfacing of Lovers Lane from West Market Street to Parkman Road and Tod Avenue from Parkman Road to Crestwood Drive;
• Approved the city's application to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the 2018 Community Development Block Grant, which is expected to garner $1 million, and HUD's HOME grant, which is expected to generate $450,000.
