Four semi trailers catch fire at distribution center

NORTH JACKSON — Four semi tractor trailers caught fire Wednesday afternoon at the Macy’s Distribution Center in North Jackson.
People driving along South Bailey Road around 12:30 p.m. noticed large plumes of black smoke coming from the business. Jackson Township fire Chief Dave Graham said nobody was inside the tractors, and they had been sitting stationary in the parking lot for 12 hours by the time a mechanic reported the fire.
“The cause of the fire is still undetermined,” Graham said.
There had been five tractors sitting next to each other at the time of the fire. While four tractors burned in the fire, a fifth tractor received damage to its right paint and tires, while everything on the other side was fine. Graham said the fire started in one of the tractors, which then spread to the other three.
Graham said fire departments from Jackson, Ellsworth and Milton townships responded. Lordstown was also contacted, but was canceled while on their way.
“We’re mostly volunteer so sometimes it takes a while,” Graham said.
The tractors that burned all had their fuel tanks topped off, but Graham said diesel fuel is not that explosive so there were no major issues in fighting the fire. It took about 30 minutes to extinguish the flames.
