WARREN – County health officials are warning the public about a drug cocktail that seemed to work its way down from distributors in Cleveland to the Mahoning Valley, resulting in 23 non-fatal overdoses over a two-day period.
The alert was sent by April Caraway, executive director of the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board.
“I had let our agencies know to brace for this because Cleveland had a huge number of overdoses two to three weeks ago, and that’s about how long it takes for the drugs to reach us,” Caraway said.
The alert was made possible by the 2016 introduction of “overdose” as a codifier in an early warning health crisis monitoring system, Caraway said. The system, EpiCenter, tracked 23 overdoses between 3 a.m. Wednesday and 3 a.m. Friday, Caraway said.
All of the victims were revived with naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal drug, according to Randee Shoenberger, an epidemiologist with the Trumbull County Combined Health District.
