400 layoffs planned at Alliance plant

ALLIANCE — An area manufacturer said more than 400 workers will be laid off early next year when operations at the plant stop.

Alliance Castings, East Broadway Street, Alliance, said Thursday the facility will go idle Jan. 28, but it was unclear how long the plant will be shut down or the layoffs will last.

The plant, which manufactures railroad car parts, employs 360 union and 66 salaried workers.

United Steelworkers Local 2211 President Ken Meredith said the company blames the downturn in the energy field.
