More than 30 area acts will perform at the Akron Civic Theatre Friday for the third 330 Day Concert.
March 30 was christened 330 Day in 2016 by the public radio station The Summit (90.7 FM in Struthers/91.3 FM in Akron) to launch its digital radio station The 330, which is dedicated to playing the music of area artists.
The first year six acts performed at Jilly's Music Room in Akron. Last year featured about 18 acts at The Kent Stage. This year they're celebrating 330 Day with 33 different performances in one of Akron's most historic venues.
"The Akron Civic is called the Jewel on Main Street and for good reason," said Ryan Humbert, marketing and events coordinator for the station. "It's a beautiful, historic theater. We wanted to make this the biggest one yet so why not really do it right and go right into the heart of downtown Akron and work with the Civic, this beautiful theater with beautiful acoustics, and hosting some of the best artists in northeast Ohio."
Most of the acts performing Friday can be heard on The 330 and many also are played on The Summit, which mixes local artists in its programming of national adult album alternative music.
"No other station is doing what we're doing, no other station has the same devotion to local music," Humbert said.
Several Mahoning Valley acts will be represented in the lineup. Demos Papadimas will be making his second 330 Day appearance after playing at The Kent Stage in 2017.
"I thought it was a really nice, well-organized, professional showcase of all the different artists in northeast Ohio," Papadimas said of last year's event. "I was able to meet a lot of other singer songwriters that I'd heard before but next met. It was great to get everybody together, make connections, meet people."
Papadimas will be joined by Kaitlin Hedge, the violin player from his band, on the song "Still the Same," from his new EP.
Each act will get to play one song and two different performance spaces will be set up on the Akron Civic Theatre stage to minimize the setup time in between acts. Most acts also will be playing acoustic to keep the show flowing. Humbert organized a Tom Petty tribute featuring area musicians last fall, which drew more than 1,000 people to E.J. Thomas Hall, and he has organized other multi-act events in the past.
"Once you get into double digits, there's no difference between 20 and 30 acts," Humbert said. "It's just a matter of keeping everything incredibly organized."
Rick Deak is one of several musicians who will be doing double duty on Friday. He'll be playing a song from his 2016 release "The Black EP" as a solo act and performing as a member of The Vindys. Deak credited the exposure on The Summit to the large crowd The Vindys drew recently for its first headlining show at Musica in Akron.
"I was caught off guard by how many people were there," Deak said. "To have that kind of support was directly related to The Summit's support of The Vindys."
Deak performs some of his solo material with The Vindys and Radio Lark, but Friday technically will be his first solo appearance.
"I had every intention of doing an album release, but when I started producing and working with The Vindys and Radio Lark, I didn't have time to put attention on the solo album. This allows me to step aside and do something as a solo artist."
Humbert, who will be performing with his band Shooter Sharp & the Shootouts, said all of the acts will be invited to participate in a finale to close out the evening.
