Art show that awards amateurs
The fifth "But I Know What I Like" art show opens Sunday at the Davis Family YMCA, 45 McClurg Road, Boardman.
The show, which is open to amateur and professional artists, attracted 216 works submitted by 91 artists. Three lay people were invited to judge in keeping with the theme, "I don't know much about art, but I know what I like." More than $700 in prizes will be awarded at the opening.
Visitors can vote for the People's Choice through Oct. 31 by donating $1 for three votes. All proceeds from the show benefit the John Patterson Memorial Scholarship for adults with disabilities who show promise in visual art.
Dorian Books expands concert
Two new music series will start this weekend at Dorian Books, 802 Elm St., Youngstown, which hosts the "Music at Madison" cabaret shows.
"Jazz at Madison" at 8 p.m. Friday will feature local jazz musicians performing contemporary and traditional jazz. "Songs of Inspiration" at 7 p.m. Sunday will feature songs with a positive message. It may include religious songs, but the program is not religion-based.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for the performers. Finger food snacks will be served at intermission, and both events are BYOB. For more information, call 330-743-2665.
Tyler chosen for Pioneer Award
Jeanne Tyler of Girard, the major donor of the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center, has been named the 2017 Pioneer Award recipient for her lifetime of public service. She will receive the award 2 p.m. Friday at the William Holmes McGuffey Elementary School, Youngstown, as part of the annual McGuffey Founder's Day.
Tyler graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in economics. She married John Tyler in 1947 and they moved to the Mahoning Valley in 1949. Her husband served as a lawyer, secretary and assistant treasurer for American Welding in Warren. She has contributed to numerous organizations, including Youngstown State University, Fellows Riverside Gardens, Visiting Nurse Association, Planned Parenthood, Stambaugh Auditorium and the Junior League of Youngstown.
'Jews & Medicine' exhibition opens at Maltz Museum
"Beyond Chicken Soup: Jews & Medicine in America" opens Tuesday at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, 2929 Richmond Road, Beachwood.
This exhibit is an education on the historic fight for equality in healthcare and a look to the future of medicine in America. It features over 200 artifacts, photographs and documents, and it illustrates how Jews used medicine to assimilate into American society, making significant contributions to the medical world and advancing civil rights.
