QB signed; Reed to leave
YOUNGSTOWN — On a day the Youngstown State football team received some bad news regarding one of its top players, it also announced the commitment of heavily recruited quarterback Demeatric Crenshaw.
Crenshaw played at Pickerington Central High School, where he led the Tigers to Division I state championships in 2017 and 2019. Crenshaw was reportedly being recruited by several major Division I programs, including Boston College, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky and Louisville. YSU made his signing official Wednesday via social media.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Crenshaw completed 124-of-167 passes (74 percent) for 1,693 yards, 14 touchdowns and four interceptions his senior year. He also ran for 1,267 yards and 17 TDs. In 43 career starts, Pickerington Central was 38-5 with Crenshaw at quarterback as he accounted for 89 touchdowns.
In the 2019 state title game, he completed 14-of-16 passes for 197 yards and two TDs while also running for 62 yards. In 2017, he ran for 161 yards and set a title-game record by rushing for six TDs.
The signing came as senior defensive end Justus Reed announced he is entering the transfer portal. The 6-3, 270-pound Reed, who led YSU and tied for the conference lead in sacks with 13 this past season, made the announcement on Twitter. Reed transferred to YSU from the University of Florida as a sophomore. He will be entering his sixth season of college football after two medical redshirts resulted in added eligibility.
Reed is a graduate transfer, so he will be able to play right away regardless of where he transfers.
