Fla. International tops Penguins

NEW YORK — Junior Donel Cathcart III scored 27 points and freshman Darius Quisenberry had 21, but the Youngstown State men’s basketball team dropped a 102-93 decision to Florida International on Sunday afternoon in the Johnny Bach Classic at Rose Hill Gym.

The Penguins fall to 2-4 overall while the Panthers improve to 5-1.

The Penguins had the same number of field-goal attempts (35), had two more made 3-pointers (9-7) and out-rebounded the Panthers (45-31), but FIU went 25-of-34 from the free-throw line while the Penguins were just 14-of-23 from the charity stripe. Naz Bohannon grabbed 10 rebounds for YSU.

Brian Beard Jr. scored 26 of his career-high 36 points in the second half and Devon Andrews added 18 points for FIU. Sixteen of Beard Jr.’s point came from the free-throw line.

Trailing 48-44 at halftime, FIU opened the second half with an 11-6 run capped by Willy Nunez Jr.’s 3-pointer for a 55-52 lead. The Penguins rallied and led 66-64 after Cathcart’s fourth 3-pointer at the 12:29 mark. Beard’s 3-point play, amid a 10-2 run, put the Golden Panthers ahead 69-66. They upped the lead to 83-78 with 7:58 left to play and never trailed again, though YSU cut the deficit to 93-89 with 2:48 remaining.

YSU returns home to host Westminster on Wednesday at the Beeghly Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
