CORTLAND — The final team scores were announced, and the members of the Lakeview boys track team picked up their trophy and took a victory lap around their home field.
The Bulldogs celebrated a victory at the Trumbull County Track and Field Championships, one that had been over a decade coming.
“That was our first Trumbull County championship since 2013,” Lakeview head coach Mark Swining said.
The Bulldog boys took the top spot with 102.5 points. Warren G. Harding and McDonald tied for second with 92, Mineral Ridge was fourth with 68.5 and Howland rounded out the top five with 62.5.
On the girls side, McDonald won for the first time since 2019, picking up 115 points. Mineral Ridge was the runner-up with 105, Warren G. Harding was third after recording 64, Girard’s 57 were good enough for fourth and Howland posted 51.5 for fifth.
Mineral Ridge’s Ava Hulett won the girls MVP, and McDonald junior thrower Emma Bundy took home the girls field MVP. For the boys, McDonald’s Carson Klase was the MVP, with Mineral Ridge freshman thrower Jonathan Culp taking the field MVP.
BOYS
Lakeview won, not through first-place finishes, but by accumulating points with top-three results.
Trent Miller was third in the 3200, Noah Engle was third in the 200, Landon Hall was the runner-up in the 300 hurdles and the Bulldogs were third in the 4×100 relay and second in the 4×200. Engle and Thomas Easton also finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 100.
“It’s really a team effort, and the kids make it a lot of fun when they take ownership of that team effort,” Swining said.
Harding’s Devon Morgan took the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.84 seconds. Matthew Reardon, James Thomas, Donovan Salero-McCoy and Stephen Sims teamed up in the 4×200 relay for the win, posting a 1:30.65.
Salero-McCoy also won the 200 by running 22.78, and Ki’yan Patterson ran 51.38 to pick up another win for the Raiders in the 400. And Marcus Crum rounded out the Raiders’ win with a victory in the long jump, recording a 21-2.50.
Klase pulled out a win for McDonald in the 1600 with a 4:23.80, and he clocked a 1:57.48 for first in the 800. Klase was also a part of the winning 4×400 team that featured Jonathan Black, Joey Cappuzzello and Josh Krumpak that ran 3:33.66.
Culp won the shot put with a try of 57-8, and Mineral Ridge teammate Dominic Pappagallo was first in the 3200 with a 9:45.63.
Ethan Bosch picked up a win in the 100 for Chalker by running 10.76.
The Girard quartet of Nick Rafferty, Josiah Hunter, Mykell Collier-Dixon and Allen Hess Cordona ran 43.87 as victors in the 4×100.

GIRLS
McDonald freshman Naomi Sheesley had a standout day in her first crack at the county championships. The freshman posted a 5:10.50 to win the 1600, and she won the 800 with a 2:23.03.
“God willing, she’s showing a lot of promise and she’s doing really, really well,” McDonald girls coach Mary Domitrovich said. “I think she made her mark in the area at such a young age, and God willing, she’ll stay healthy and continue to do that.”
The Blue Devils also earned a win in the 4×400. Juliana Krumpak, Rita Domitrovich, Kylie Flere and Sheesely combined to run 4:09.58. And Bundy won the discus with an attempt of 136-5.
“It truly was a team effort,” Mary Domitrovich said. “The sprints, the distance, the hurdles, the throws, the jumps, I think it truly all came together and lifted each other up. It’s kinda neat to see them all come together like that and what they can do when they do come together.”
Hulett won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.59 seconds, and she took the 300 hurdles with a 46.37. Fellow Ram Kylee Molnar took first in the 3200 after running 11:36.59.
