Western Reserve runs past Campbell 36-14
CAMPBELL — Since John Armeni took over at Western Reserve, what they call “phonebooth football” has been how they operate.
That was shown off on Friday as the Blue Devils took down Campbell, 36-14 to move to 6-0 on the season.
“It feels pretty good,” Armeni said about the start. “If you would have told me at the beginning of the year that we’d be 6-0, I’d have been a pretty happy camper. I think there’s still an awful lot of things that we can do to improve our football team, though. So that makes me excited.”
Western Reserve wasted no time getting on the scoresheet, driving down the field with senior Dominic Ricciardi serving as the drive’s exclamation point from a yard out.
Campbell responded almost immediately, but the play was called back due to an illegal formation penalty.
The Blue Devils took that extra opportunity and made the most of it.
Reserve junior Nate Alexander intercepted Demetrius Lambert’s pass to set Western Reserve up at the 8-yard line where the Blue Devils carried it in on the following play.
The Red Devils weren’t going down without a fight however.
Campbell executed a trick play, connecting Mihali Koullias with Teyon Harris on a 21-yard strike.
But each Campbell jab felt as if it were matched by a haymaker, as the Blue Devils responded almost instantly.
Senior Jack Darney reached paydirt on a 38-yard scamper to put Western Reserve up by 15.
“I think that’s just game plan and preparation and our guys executing,” Armeni said. “That’s what happens when you have good experience. We have a lot of experience coming back, a bunch of lettermen, bunch of three-year starters. Those guys understand that this was a business trip and they had to execute.”
As the game went on, the hits kept coming.
Reserve tailback Chris Pater punched in the ball from 2 yards out to extend the team’s lead before the break.
The Blue Devils briefly extended their lead to running clock territory, but Campbell closed out the third quarter with a 21-yard run by Lambert to cut the score to 36-14 in favor of Western Reserve.
Campbell (2-4) hosts Mineral Ridge next week as they look to get back in the win column.
Western Reserve moves to 6-0 as they welcome rival Springfield to their home turf.
“I’ve been on both sides of that coin, and it’s no fun when you’re not playing meaningful football,” Armeni said. “Our kids and our coaches have worked hard, and it hasn’t been easy, but we’ve worked hard to put ourselves in a position to play meaningful football. In this league, every week’s a playoff week. We have Springfield coming to town, you know, and they’ve been the litmus test for our league in our area, and we’re excited about the opportunity.”
