Friday’s 1st round playoff capsules

Division III, Region 9

13-Chardon-Notre Dame Cathedral Latin (5-5) vs. 4-Canfield (9-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: Canfield High School

Winner plays: Winner of 5-Hubbard/12-New Philadelphia

The Skinny: The Canfield Cardinals are coming into Friday’s matchup on an 8-game winning streak. Their only loss of the season came on Sept. 27 against District III, Region 9 No. 2 seed Dover (9-0). Junior quarterback Broc Lowry has been leading the way for the Cardinals both through the air and on the ground. Before Friday’s win over Boardman, Canfield had scored 35 or more points in seven straight games. Don’t look for them to cool down anytime soon. The Lions finished the regular season at .500 but topped Lake Catholic 28-7 to finish the season on a high note after losing three-straight games. They outscored their opponents 259-250 this season.

12-New Philadelphia (6-4) vs. 5-Hubbard (9-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: Hubbard High School

Winner plays: Winner of 4-Canfield/13-Chardon-Notre Dame Cathedral Latin

The Skinny: Hubbard is coming off its first loss of the season, which came against D-V, Region 17 No. 2 seed South Range in a battle of undefeated teams. Senior running back T. C. Caffey has been the workhorse for the Eagles, carrying the ball 267 times for 2,287 yards and 33 touchdowns. Junior Ben Wilcox also has 450 yards and 5 touchdowns on 44 carries this season. The Quakers ended their season with a 17 points loss to Dover and also suffered losses to Canfield (35-0), Chardon (21-0), and Steubenville (41-7). They’ve also outscored their opponents 233-185 and have scored 30-plus points in all of their victories this season.

Division IV, Region 13

16-Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (5-5) vs. 1-West Branch (10-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: West Branch High School

Winner plays: Winner of 8-Fairless/9-Poland

The Skinny: Behind junior quarterback Dru DeShields the Warriors have put together a historic season with an undefeated record while also scoring 517 points: DeShields has thrown for 2,604 yards and 30 touchdowns with only three interceptions. He’s also rushed for 841 yards and 13 touchdowns. Senior running back Steven Marra has been just as dangerous with 996 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns on 161 carries. Nick Wilson has been DeShields’ favorite target with 59 catches for 1,003 yards. Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy finished the regular season with a loss to Manchester after winning three of their first four games this season. They also outscored their opponents 224-198. The Royals’ offense has also been led by junior running back Kyle Snider who has rushed for 1,135 yards and 14 touchdowns.

14-Canton South (7-3) vs. 3-Ursuline (6-3)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: Youngstown State’s Stambaugh Stadium

Winner plays: Winner of 6-Salem/11-Peninsula Woodridge

The Skinny: After losing two straight to St. Vincent-St. Mary (49-14) and Villa Angela-St. Joseph (46-28) — on short notice due to a COVID-19 cancellation — the Irish fought back with two straight victories over East (48-6) and Cardinal Mooney (43-12). Quarterback Brady Shannon is the program’s all-time passing leader and has thrown for 1,761 yards and 18 touchdowns while spreading the ball to several receivers. Running back Demarcus McElroy has carried the load on the ground with 1,214 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns. Despite their No. 13 seeding, the Wildcats had a solid regular season but suffered losses to Carrollton (34-28), top-seeded West Branch (63-42), and Salem (35-32). The Wildcats also outscored their opponents 394-192 this season.

11-Peninsula Woodridge (6-4) at 6-Salem (7-3)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: Salem’s Sebo Stadium

Winner plays: Winner of 3-Ursuline/14-Canton South

The Skinny: Led by junior quarterback Jackson Johnson (2,326 passing yards, 911 rushing yards) the Quakers have been an offensive force this season, but have faltered on three different occasions, losing to top-seeded West Branch (43-42 OT), Carrollton (28-26), and Alliance (27-21 OT). Johnson has spread the ball around but senior wide receiver Blaize Exline has been his favorite receiver catch 77 passes for 1,022 yards and 13 TDs. Woodridge ended their regular season with a loss to Ravenna (34-16) but hadn’t lost since Sept.17 before that. they also topped 7-2 Streetsboro 35-21.

9-Poland (7-3) vs. 8-Fairless (9-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: Brideweser Stadium

Winner plays: Winner of 1-West Branch/16-Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy

The Skinny: Poland’s three losses came in the first five games of the season to Canfield (24-12), Hubbard (27-23), and South Range 42-34). Since then, they’ve rattled off five straight wins. Senior quarterback Jack Fulton has led the way for Poland. Fairless’ one loss this season came against Triway (37-13) and they outscored their opponents 345-165.
