Soccer, volleyball in district games this week
Girls soccer teams get the 2019 fall sports district week started today with all three divisions playing semifinal games.
Today’s winners will be back in action on Thursday evening for district championship games. Those winners will advance to the regional level of play as one of just 16 teams remaining in the state in each division.
LaBrae, the No. 1 seed in the Division III Niles district highlights today’s sechedule. The Vikings face fourth-seeded Rootstown at home at 7 p.m.
District semifinal games, like the sectional games last week, are played at the home site of the better-seeded team. Thursday’s district finals will be played at neutral sites.
A couple of two seeds also will host games today. Lakeview entertains third-seeded West Branch in a Division II district semifinal, and Garfield plays at home against third-seeded Berkshire in the Division III Chagrin district. Badger is the four seed in that district and visits top-seeded Kirtland.
John F. Kennedy is the three seed in the Niles D-III district and goes on the road against second-seeded Ursuline.
In volleyball, sixth-seeded Howland faces second-seeded Solon Tuesday night in the Division I district at Solon.
The other three volleyball divisions play their semifinals on Wednesday. A pair of Trumbull County No. 1 seeds will be in action in Division IV. Badger faces fifth-seeded Brookfield in the district at Chalker and Mineral Ridge meets Springfield, the four seed in the Columbiana district.
In the Chalker district, second-seeded Newton Falls and No. 10 Mathews play a sectional bracket final tonight, a match that was postponed from Saturday. That winner will face third-seeded Newbury on Wednesday.
In other matches, fifth-seeded Lakeview faces top-seeded Lake Catholic in the Division II district at Jefferson, and fourth-seeded Grand Valley meets top-seeded Crestwood in the Division III district at Berkshire.
Volleyball district title games are scheduled Saturday afternoon.
The boys soccer district semifinal schedule is opposite that of volleyball. Divisions II and III play on Tuesday and Division I on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, No. 1 seed Howland is at home against fourth-seeded Ursuline, while third-seeded Lakeview visits No. 2 Poland in the Division II Niles district.
In Division III, second-seeded Champion plays host to No. 3 Mathews, and fourth-seeded Garfield visits top-seeded Crestwood in the Warren District, while second-seeded Badger is at home against Andrews Osborne Academy, the three seed, in the Gates Mills district.
The boys soccer title games are scheduled Saturday afternoon.
