Billy Goat Challenge celebrates 17th year Saturday in McDonald

The 17th annual Billy Goat Challenge Cross Country Invitational is Saturday in McDonald’s Woodland Park.

The junior boys and girls races are at 10 a.m., and 10:30 a.m ., respectively, while the boys varsity race is at 11 a.m., while the girls follow at 11:40 a.m. The award ceremony is at the gazebo at 12:30 p.m.

Team attending the meets have more than 40 team and 20 individual state titles in their history. Woodridge boys eight titles, while McDonald and Maplewood each have seven. Lakeview and Austintown Fitch boys have multiple state championships in the 1960s and 70s, with Fitch legend Alan Scharsu, who won individual state titles from 1975-77.

Woodridge girls have three state titles, while Chardon has two. Host McDonald has one in 2014. There have been 16 individual girls state champions from teams attending this meet.

Woodridge boys and girls were the defending team champions. Last year’s girls state champion Zoey Simmons from Crestwood returns, while the second-, third- and fourth-place finisher from 2018 were Woodridge’s Micah Blair, Sam Dutt and Ryan Champa.

The course and meet record for the girls is held by Olympic qualifier Bridget Franek from Crestwood (18:47), while CVCA’s Kyle Sullinger holds the boys mark with 16:18.

As of Monday, the following boys and girls teams will be in attendance: Cardinal, Cardinal Mooney, Chaney, Columbiana, Chardon, CVCA, East Palestine, Garfield, Girard, Howland (girls), Jackson-Milton, Jefferson (boys), LaBrae, Lake Center Christian, Lakeview, Maplewood (boys), McDonald, Mineral Ridge, Springfield, Streetsboro and Struthers.
