Scrappers rained out; play 2 today

NILES — Util Sunday, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers had avoided having one of their home games postponed due to inclement weather.

But almost two hours after the scheduled start time on Sunday and with near-nonstop rain during the afternoon, the Scrappers announced the postponement of their series-opening matchup against the Williamsport Crosscutters.

The game is scheduled to be played as part of a doubleheader tonight with the first game starting at 6. Each game will be shortened to seven innings.

On the mound for game one lefty Matt Turner is expected to start for the Scrappers and in game two it will be Ethan Hankins.

Fans with tickets to Sunday’s game can exchange them for tickets for any 2019 regular season home game at the team box office.

During the long rain delay on Sunday, the 200 or so fans in the crowd passed the time watching the Indians’ game on the video board in the outfield.

The team will come out ready, as being prepared, no matter the weather is always their mindset.

“As a team and as an organization you’re better off preparing with the mindset that we’re going to play and that’s what we did,” Scrappers manager Dennis Malave said after the home opener last month was nearly cancelled due to the weather.

The teams last met July 3 as part of a three game series. The Scrappers won games two and three, 7-0 and 2-0, after falling 9-1 in the first game of the series on July 1.
