Scrappers hold off NY-PL Pinckney leader Batavia

BATAVIA, N.Y. — Bryan Lavastida’s RBI double in the top of the sixth inning lifted Mahoning Valley past New York-Penn League Pinckney Division Leader Batavia Sunday, 5-4.

The Scrappers (18-18) look for the sweep over the Muckdogs (22-14) as the two teams play a rare day game, starting today at 11:05 a.m.

Raynel Delgado singled in Lavastida, while George Valera hit a sacrifice fly to score Brayan Rocchio in the top of the third to tie Batavia at 2.

Lavastida, who was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, tripled in Billy Wilson with one out in the top of the fifth. Rocchio singled in Lavastida to give the Scrappers at 4-2 lead with two outs in the inning.

Batavia rallied as Mahoning Valley imploded in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Muckdogs scored on a fielding error and hit batsman to cut the lead to 5-4. Both teams combined for seven errors.

The Scrappers return home Tuesday as they begin a series with State College, starting at 7:05 p.m.
