MV twirls another shutout
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Mahoning Valley’s Ethan Hankins led the charge in a five-hit shutout for the Scrappers — their second shutout in as many games.
Hankins, a 2018 first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Indians, allowed zero runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six. The bullpen was nearly perfect in closing out the 2-0 victory.
The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Hankins lowered his ERA to 1.06 as he fired 4 1/3 innings. Francis Cespedes picked up the win in relief. He didn’t allow a hit in two innings. Luis Valdez earned a hold with two-thirds of a scoreless inning, allowing one hit, and Tim Herrin got his fifth save and still has a perfect 0.00 ERA.
Pedro Alfonseca drove in the first run for the Scrappers (11-8), with a run-scoring single that brought home Billy Wilson, who doubled earlier in the frame. Brayan Rocchio started the eighth inning with a triple off the wall in right field, and Ray Delgado followed with an sacrifice fly to push the lead to 2-0.
The Scrappers return home for a three-game series with State College at 7 p.m. tonight.
