Clemente 3rd youngest to reach U.S. Amateur

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Howland native Gianna Clemente became the third-youngest female in USGA history to q­ualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Wednesday.

Clemente, 11, carded a 1-under 71 at Ford’s Colony Country Club in Williamsburg, Va. She finished third at the 33-person qualifying event, one stroke ahead of two fourth-place finishers. The top three qualified.

Aneka Seumanutafa won the event at 5-under 67, and Tracy Lee was second at 3-under 69.

Clemente, who won the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship at the age of 7, birdied three of the last five holes to earn the qualification.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur is Aug. 5-11 at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss. The event, which is made up mostly of college golfers, will be televised on Fox Sports 1 (on Aug. 7 and Aug. 10) and via USGA.org (Aug. 8).
