Batavia rallies late to top MV

BATAVIA, N.Y. — Troy Johnston hit a one-out double to right field, scoring Milton Smith and Nic Ready in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift New York-Penn League Pinckney Division leader Batavia past Mahoning Valley on Monday morning, 4-1.

Mahoning Valley’s Bryan Lavastida hit a two-out single to center field to create a 1-all tie — scoring Johnathan Rodriguez from second base in the top of the eighth inning.

The Scrappers (18-19) left runners at second and third bases in the top of the fifth inning, and a runner at second in the top of the second. Other than those two innings and the top of the eighth, the Scrappers went down 1-2-3.

After Batavia’s two-run double in the bottom of the eighth, Andrew Turner doubled to drive in Johnston, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, for a 4-1 lead.

The Muckdog pitchers of Easton Lucas, Dakota Bennett and Evan Brabrand, who picked up the win and a blown save, limited the Scrappers to four hits and struck out seven.

Ethan Hankins had a great start for the Scrappers with six strikeouts, one walk and three hits in five innings. The Cleveland Indians’ 2018 first-round pick lowered his ERA to 0.88. In five of his seven outings this year, 6-foot-6, 200-pound Hankins has held opponents scoreless.

Reliever Andrew Misiaszek took the loss for Mahoning Valley. In 1 1/3 innings of work, he yielded four hits, three runs (all earned) and three strikeouts.

Batavia took the series, two games to one, and leads the Pinckney Division. The Scrappers are in fourth place — five games back.

Tonight, Mahoning Valley begins a three-game series with State College at Eastwood Field in Niles, starting at 7:05 p.m.
