State College wins high-scoring shootout

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The State College Spikes delivered the final blow in a back-and-forth, high-scoring affair against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

The Spikes overcame three different deficits, scoring six times in the eighth inning to pull away for a 13-9 victory at Medlar Field.

State College (7-4) trailed, 9-7, going into the eighth inning, but a pair of two-run doubles put State College in the lead for good.

The Scrappers (7-4) allowed 15 hits — five extra-base hits — and walked eight. MV did have 12 hits of its own, including a huge night for outfielder George Valera. The non-drafted free agent out of Queens, New York, went 4-for-5 with six RBIs. He homered (his third of the season), doubled and scored a run. He’s now batting a team-high .333.

Carlos Vargas started for the Scrappers, allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out two. The bullpen allowed 10 runs in just three innings, with Juan Paredes (1-1) giving up six in just two-thirds of an inning.

The Scrappers, who also held leads of 1-0 and 6-3, continue their road trip today and Thursday (both games at 7 p.m.) before returning to Eastwood Field for a three-game homestand against Batavia at 7 p.m. Friday.
