Former Scrapper to manage
Dennis Malave, a member of the first Mahoning Valley Scrappers baseball team in 1999, will return to Niles this summer as manager of the Cleveland Indians’ minor league team.
The Indians announced Tuesday that Malave, who most recently served as bench coach for the Class AA Akron Rubber Ducks in 2018, will be making his managerial debut in his 15th season with the organization. Included in his coaching career is a season (2010) as hitting coach with Mahoning Valley.
The Scrappers are a member of the Class A-Short season New York-Penn League. The season runs from mid-June through early September. The Scrappers’ home opener this season is Sunday, June 16 at 6:35 p.m. against the Batavia Muckdogs.
Malave, a native of Venezuela, played in the Indians’ minor league organization from 1998 through 2004, including 1999-2001 with the Scrappers. An outfielder as a player, he was the Indians’ bullpen catcher from 2007-08. Malave served as hitting coach for the Arizona League Indians from 2011-17.
Malave’s staff in Niles this season will include two returning from the 2018 season, Jason Blanton (pitching coach) and Omir Santos (bench coach). Following a year in Lynchburg, Grant Fink will return to the Scrappers as hitting coach. Completing the staff are strength and conditioning coach Juan Acevedo and athletic trainer Patrick Reynolds.
