Oviedo stars again on mound
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Luis Oviedo, who was named Pitcher of the Week last week in the New York-Penn League, continued his domination of the league Tuesday night in the Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ 2-0 win over the State College Spikes.
Oviedo struck out seven in seven innings of work, allowing just four hits without walking a batter. He improved to 3-0 on the season with an earned run average of 0.39.
The 6-foot-4 Venezuelan, who pitched with the Arizona Rookie League Indians last season, has struck out 34 in 23 innings over four starts. He has allowed just nine hits and three walks.
Luis Araujo picked up his first save with two innings of shutout relief work.
The Spikes’ pitchers weren’t bad either Tuesday night, striking out 13 against the Scrappers.
All the offense that Mahoning Valley needed came in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Ronny Dominguez walked and Gabriel Mejia singled hin to third. Mejia then stole second and Jose Fermin drove both in with a single to center field.
The Scrappers (13-4) now head home for a six-game homestand starting tonight against the Batavia Muckdogs. Cameron Mingo gets the Fourth of July start at Eastwood Field.
