Homers power MV to third-straight victory

AUBURN, N.Y. — Back-to-back home runs by Hosea Nelson and Angel Lopez proved enough power to lift Mahoning Valley past Auburn, 7-6.

Nelson’s two-run shot over the right-field wall and Lopez’ dinger to left-center field gave the Scrappers (19-11) a 7-4 lead in the sixth inning, erasing a 4-0 deficit.

Both Nelson and Tyler Freeman were 3 for 4 with a combined three RBIs. Freeman drove in a run with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.

Cole Daily’s single to right field close the gap for the Doubledays (16-15) to 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth.

Israel Pineda’s Fielder’s Choice to shortstop led Carson Shaddy score in the bottom of ninth, cutting the gap to 7-6.

Dakoty Clemmer, who pitched the last two innings for Mahoning Valley, struck out the final two batters to pick up his second save. He had four strikeouts.

The win is the Scrappers third straight as they are 3 1/2 games up on the Doubledays in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division.

Zach Draper went the first five innings and gave up four runs — all in the bottom of the first –but picked up the win to go to 2-3.

The two teams conclude their three-game set tonight at 6:30 p.m., as the Scrappers go for the sweep.

Mahoning Valley stays on the road through the weekend and returns home Tuesday for a three-game set against the Doubledays.
